Another 80's video literally retold

October 28, 2008 ghp 1 comment

This time, Tears for Fears’ classic Head Over Heels (off of 1985′s Songs from the Big Chair) gets the literal remake treatment…

Garfield – Garfield = Funny

March 3, 2008 ghp Leave a comment

If’n you have a somewhat, shall we say, off sense of humor (like me), then I think you’ll like this.

Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolor disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against lonliness in a quiet American suburb.

Garfield minus Garfield

Garfield minus Garfield

Garfield minus Garfield

Garfield minus Garfield

Yes, Garfield minus Garfield.

It took the surrealistic step of removing the title character himself, but this has once again made Garfield worth reading for me.

You know, it’s probably wrong that I find this to be so absolutely, drop-dead funny, but I look at it & smile, and then I say it out loud & giggle uncontrollably…

Funny Fundies?

January 18, 2008 ghp Leave a comment

This — Top 100 Fundamentalist Chat Room Quotes — falls into the category of “uncomfortably” funny. It’s funny in a sad way, even as it’s frustrating, infuriating, and just downright disheartening. The sheer ignorance on display is stunning, even as it’s bothersome to see a (very) few solid points lumped in with, and equated to, heterodoxy & outright heresy. By and large, though, there is so much sinful ignorance & hate running through the quotes that it boggles the mind.

It’s worth a brief look (warning for, shall we say, salty language…), if only to see just what Christians are up against as a result from “friendly” fire. With “friends” like those, who needs enemies!

I can has cheezburger

January 18, 2008 ghp 1 comment

Let me preface this by clearly stating that I am not a cat person. I don’t like them thar furry little devil-beasts. I like dogs. Boston Terriers, to be more precise (in case you hadn’t noticed…).

That said, for some inexplicable reason, I just cannot get enough of the lolcats phenomena, as found at I Can Has Cheezburger?

i can has cheezburger?

I don’t know exactly why, but these things are just laugh-out-loud funny to me. I think it has something to do with the tortured syntax that is often used by ‘teh kittehs’. Per Wikipedia, “Lolcats are images combining photographs of animals, most frequently cats, with a subjectively humorous and idiosyncratic caption in broken English referred to as Kitty Pidgin, Kitteh, or lolspeak.”

kitteh go raaar!

Funny, funny stuff — although, somewhat typically, the Territorial Wife doesn’t get it & just looked at me like I was a nutjob when I showed her some lolcats. I think my sense of humor must be too sophisticated for her… ;^)

Sweep The Leg

May 30, 2007 ghp Leave a comment

Those of you who are of a certain age, having (like me) come of age during the 80′s, know the power & impact (he said only half-facetiously) that The Karate Kid (IMDB Page, Wikipedia Entry) had on American culture in the years since 1984. Heck, the saga of Daniel-san & Mr. Miyagi practically makes ESPN SportsGuy Bill Simmons get all weepy with joy

I still remember the day in 1984 when I first saw the movie — it happened to be the day that my 2nd niece (who is about to make big sis into Mother-of-the-Bride in just over a month!) was born. It’s a great flick. Even today, it holds up as a great piece of cheezy Americana.

But my main reason for bringing it up now is this: Check out this videoSweep The Leg by No More Kings. If you ever wondered what became of Johnny & the rest of the Cobra Kai, then this is the video for you! Seriously though, it’s a great video for a really good song that was inspired by the movie – a video that has the benefit of having been written & directed by William Zabka. That’s right, the quintessential mid-80′s teen movie rich-kid bad-guy bully himself!

About the only down-checks are that they didn’t get Elisabeth Shue in the video, and that they had to settle for Mr. Belding as a replacement for Pat Morita (RIP).

Here’s the YouTube version of the video (but you really should just go to iTunes & drop the $1.99 to get the high quality version!):

Tres cool…
